13 Base Repair Depot

Date Raised : 1976-09-07 Location : Palam
Plan ADGES was the project for implementing an integrated air defence ground environment to improve the capability of the IAF to defend the Indian skies. The result was the birth of the Radar and Communication Project Office (RCPO). 13 BRD was initially formed as Area Maintenance Support Facility/Central Electronics Standards and Calibration Lab, i.e. AMSF/CESCAL under the functional control of Radar and Communication Project Office (RCPO) as part of Plan ADGES. The nucleus group for setting up of AMSF/CESCAL became functional on 07 Sep 76 under the command of Sqn Ldr SP Sharma. It consisted of five officers and 19 airmen and began in an establishment at AFS Palam. Although the nucleus group was tasked to set up the repair facility, it got engaged in repairing communication equipment that was in use in Stage I of Plan ADGES, i.e., units under HQ WAC, IAF. After this small stride, the unit moved to its location near the Palam railway crossing in mid-1983. At the new location, only the present Communication Lab was ready; thus, the unit operated from there. By 1985, three new buildings had been added: Adm Block, Technical HQ, and Signal Section. Subsequently, the buildings for Logistic Sites and Standards and Admin HQ Building Headquarter Calibration Lab became operational in 1986, and MT, MTR&S and Guard Room buildings became operational in 1988. This made it a self-contained, compact unit. The unit continued to function under the command of RCPO HQ till Apr 1992; after that, the command of the unit was transferred to Air HQ. The unit came under HQ MC, IAF on 11 Oct 92 and has been functioning as a self-accounting and self-administered Station. In 1994, AMSF/CESCAL was renamed to ADGES Maintenance & Standards Establishments. The station's command was upgraded to Air Officer Commanding in 1994, with Air Cmde M Singh as the first AOC. AMSE was renamed as 13 BRD AF on 20 Oct 04 under the command of Air Cmde AS Mann.
